JUice Usb Lighting (JUUL) or Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems (ENDS) products are commonly referred to as Electronic Cigarettes (aka e-cigarettes, vape-pens).
These devices are all battery-powered devices to inhale nicotine in place of a cigarette. Each product has coils charged by the electric battery, warming the contained nicotine mixture into a vapor. When inhaled, this action is referenced as “vaping.” When heated, vape products can produce particles of heavy metals such as cadmium, chromium, lead, manganese, and nickel, all of which can become lodged in lung tissue. Some vape liquids contain nitrosamines, known to cause cancer.
Chemicals found in vape juice include diacetyl, formaldehyde, toluene, and acrolein. These chemicals have been connected to the development of bronchiolitis obliterans, commonly known as “popcorn lung.” Symptoms of popcorn lung include coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath similar to the symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
These devices contain dangerously high amounts of nicotine. The delivery from these products is known as pods, one JUUL pod hold the same nicotine as a full pack of traditional cigarettes. The average traditional cigarette holds 12mg of nicotine while, an E-cigarette contains a proposed 59mg per pod. The concentrated nicotine mixture in a JUUL pod is not only more concentrated but also absorbed at a higher and more rapid rate than traditional cigarettes.
Sadly, the FDA has obtained numerous reports of JUUL users who have become addicted to the JUUL products resulting in substantial medical outcomes as a result of nicotine poisoning and toxicity
Compensation in a JUUL Addiction Lawsuit
If you or a child has become addicted to nicotine as a result of JUUL use, you may be entitled to compensation for the following damages:
- Past and future medical expenses (as a result of the injuries, addiction, and treatment)
- Past and future pain and suffering (physical and mental) caused by injuries, treatment, and recovery
- Past and future loss of enjoyment/quality of life
Nicotine poisoning includes:
- Blood clots
- Elevated blood pressure
- Heart injuries
- Joint pain
JUUL devices put our population, especially our younger generation, at risk for decades to come. These products were marketed to minors glamoring vaping by showing enjoyable experiences within various settings as a “satisfying alternative to cigarettes.” A new Truth Initiative® study published in Tobacco Control found that 63 percent of JUUL users between 15 and 24 years old did not know that the product always contains nicotine.
Several public health organizations and medical groups have filed a federal lawsuit challenging the FDA’s allowance of e-cigarettes to avoid full regulatory compliance until 2022 (four years past the initial deadline of 13 years).
How the FDA is Regulating E-Cigarettes
What is clear is the explosion of use and nicotine addiction in children driven by the advent of ENDS, especially the pod-based products such as JUUL. After years of witnessing a steady decline in the use of tobacco products by children and young adults, we are now seeing a rapid resurgence of the use of tobacco products in these populations. Chemicals linked with the severe respiratory disease found in common e-cigarette flavors
Diacetyl, a flavoring chemical linked to cases of severe respiratory disease, was found in more than 75% of flavored electronic cigarettes and refill liquids tested by researchers at Harvard T.H.
